It is very important that children learn how to look after their teeth from an early age to ensure that they can have a healthy smile for life. We, therefore, recommend that your child visits the dentist before they are 6 months of age so they can get used to the dental surgery and so we can advise on healthy eating and tooth brushing. We have a very caring approach here at The Oral Health Practice; our aim is to make your child’s dental appointment comfortable and fun.

Maintaining good oral health is very important for your child’s general health too. Dental problems can cause difficulty eating and drinking as well as affecting sleep and concentration. Although children will loose their first set of teeth, it is still incredibly important that they are well looked after. These teeth allow your child to eat and speak correctly, as well as maintaining space for the permanent teeth to follow.

As your child grows we continue to offer preventative advice and keep a check on dental health and development. When children are at high risk of developing decay we can apply fluoride varnish to their teeth. This provides extra protection against decay when used in addition to regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste. This process may need to be repeated every 3-6 months depending on the need of your child.

We may also decide that the application of fissure sealants are necessary to prevent dental decay. A fissure sealant is a safe and painless way of protecting teeth by covering the grooves (fissures) in the back teeth where food and bacteria can become trapped. The sealant is a white, plastic coating that acts a shield in these areas where dental decay is most common. If your child does experience dental decay we will be able to treat this quickly in a gentle and effective way. We can also refer to an orthodontic specialist if teeth become poorly aligned and braces are required.

Children’s dentistry is funded by the NHS up to the age of 18.
